Annie Sprinkle
Prostitute/Porn Star Turned Sex Educator/Performance Artist

AnnieSprinkleDr. Annie Sprinkle, Ph.D has devoted the past 36 years to passionately researching and exploring sexuality, from the sacred to the profane. She has documented and shared her findings through explicit films, photography, and sexuality workshops. For two decades she toured her controversial one-woman theater shows internationally to great acclaim. Today she is exploring the place where sexology and ecology meet—sexecology, and she is an “ecosexual.”

Considered a role model for a new generation of feminists, she challenges old conceptions and established role models of sexuality. She has been the subject of a number of serious studies on performance art, the subject of several Ph.D dissertations, and has been written about, assessed, praised and applauded in publications far too many to list here. Annie also became the first porn star to earn a Ph.D, which is in Human Sexuality. She is the author of several books, including “Hardcore from the Heart: The Pleasures, Profits and Politics of Sex in Performance” which won the Firecracker Alternative Books Award, and “Post-Porn Modernist: My 25 Years as a Multi-media Whore” which has become a cult classic.

LoveArtLab-heartAnnie has been a keynote speaker, presenter and visiting artist at over 200 colleges and universities. Her presentations are often produced by gender studies, film studies, art departments, queer groups, student groups, sex education groups, etc. Her entertaining, humorous and upbeat presentations cover many timely topics including censorship, sexually explicit art and film making, queer and gender issues, the sex workers rights movement, sex positive feminism, “post-porn,” art activism and much more.

Her current academic offerings include:

  • My Life As A Feminist Porn Activist: An Intimate, Informal, Show and Tell Evening
  • My Sexy, Big, Fat, Queer Art Life: An Intimate Show and Tell
  • Adventures of the Love Art Laboratory (with her collaborator Elizabeth Stephens)
  • The Sex Doctor Is In: smaller group Q&A sessions about sex
  • “Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex” Workshop
  • Film Screenings
  • Free Sidewalk Sex Clinics (A public service and performance art piece)
  • Making Love into Art and Art Into Love (Art making workshops)

It is through her natural and compassionate expression of sometimes difficult and neglected subjects, that Annie’s message of self-acceptance and self-empowerment has been so widely received. Provocative and profound at times, her work has always sought to communicate without preaching.
